Do indoor cats need vaccines?

INDOOR CAT · VACCINES
An indoor cat still needs core vaccines, even if it never goes outside: the combination FVRCP shot (panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus) and rabies. Panleukopenia is very hardy and gets carried into the home on shoes, and the rabies shot is required by law in many countries. The feline leukemia vaccine is usually skipped for an adult indoor cat with no contact with other cats.

01What even an indoor cat needs

  • FVRCP (combination) — a core shot; after the kitten series it repeats every 3 years.
  • Rabies — core almost everywhere, often required by law; boosted every 1–3 years by vaccine and country.

02Why “stays indoors” is not a reason to skip

Panleukopenia — the feline parvovirus — is hardy in the environment and reaches the home on shoes and clothing, even if the cat never goes out. A cat can also slip into a hallway or onto a balcony, and boarding, a move or a clinic visit often needs a valid vaccination record. That is why the combination shot and rabies are given to fully indoor cats too.

03Feline leukemia — case by case

Feline leukemia (FeLV) spreads through close contact between cats — saliva, fights and grooming. For a single adult indoor cat with no outdoor access this vaccine is usually skipped. But AAFP recommends FeLV for every kitten under a year regardless of lifestyle, with a test before the first dose — it is part of the kitten vaccination schedule. If a new cat joins the home or your pet gets outdoor access, discuss it with your vet.

04Frequently asked

Is rabies vaccination required for an indoor cat?
In most countries rabies vaccination is required by law, whether or not the cat goes outside. It is also needed for transport, boarding and travel. Exact requirements depend on the country, so check with your vet.
How often to repeat vaccines for an indoor cat?
After the kitten series the FVRCP combination repeats every 3 years, and rabies every 1–3 years depending on the vaccine and local law. Your vet notes the next booster date in the passport.
At what age do vaccinations start?
A kitten gets its first FVRCP dose at 6–8 weeks, and the final dose of the series must be at 16+ weeks. A full schedule by age is in the kitten vaccination article.
